Chapters 1-5
Annemarie Johansen is a young ten- year old girl. She has a little sister who loves the thought of pink frosted cupcakes. She also had an older sister that passed away years ago. One of her favorite memories with her big sister was going to a parade. Annemarie is a Dane. The Germans are occupying Denmark. Annemarie likes to run she likes to race her friend Ellen who is a Jew. That’s how Annemarie got in trouble with the soldiers. After that they can’t walk on the street the soldiers are on. Annemarie is having a hard life.
Chapters 5-10
One night at the Johansen house there was a mysterious knock at the door. Annemarie’s mom answered it with dim candle light it was the German soldiers. Annemarie and her friend Ellen listen to the conversation. A deep voice asked for the Rosens (Ellen’s family).Annemarie’s mother was blank. Soon after silence they took an inspection around the house. When they got to Annemarie’s bedroom they asked the girls to get up and stand side by side. They asked for their names. Ellen was nervous. She said her name was Lise.
Chapters 10-15
As Ellen and her family left and giving their last hugs Ellen came up to Annemarie and promised she would be back. Annemarie shook her head knowing she would. If I were Ellen I would have made the same promise. I would always come back for my best friend whenever I leave. And I’m sure my best friend would come back too.
